Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is research-supported, 8-week training program
(plus one 3-hour silent retreat session) designed by clinical psychology
researchers Kristen Neff, PhD and Christopher Germer, PhD to cultivate the skill of
self-compassion. Self-compassion is associated with emotional well-being, less
anxiety, depression and stress, maintenance of healthy habits such as diet and
exercise, and satisfying personal relationships. And it’s easier than you think.

In MSC you’ll be learning:

  • how to stop being so hard on yourself
  • how to handle difficult emotions with greater ease
  • discover personal motivation from encouragement instead of self-criticism
  • ways to approach challenging relationships with greater ease
  • mindfulness and self-compassion practices for home and everyday life
  • learning how to tune into your own needs and offer self-care
  • how to manage caregiver fatigue

The three key components of self-compassion are self-kindness, a
sense of common humanity, and balanced, mindful awareness.

Mindfulness opens us to the present moment, helping us feel grounded
enough to see our entire experience exactly as it is. In all its glory and
messiness!

Common humanity opens us to realizing that we’re not as alone as we
sometimes think we are. That others are struggling too.

Kindness opens our hearts to give ourselves what we truly need.
Together these three skills help us feel more resourced to fully experience and
engage with the important things in our lives.

Meet Your Teachers

Karen Plumbe (MSC Teacher in Training)- I have been working in the area of mental health, health
promotion, and health education for many years. I love bringing people together to learn and
grow. Last year I completed a Graduate Diploma in Psychology with a view to creating and
delivering more mental health education programs to support others who are struggling. I
attended my first Mindful Self Compassion course about 5 years ago and was instantly taken with
what I thought was a really different approach to how I had been relating to myself. I have since
attended many and thrilled to be now teaching this course to others.

Deb St Julien (MSC Teacher in Training)- I am a retired Women’s Health and Family Nurse Practitioner. I have trained to teach Body-Mind Medicine (James Gordon’s Center for Body-Mind Medicine, https://cmbm.org/) and Mindful Self-compassion (Center for Mindful Self-Compassion, https://centerformsc.org/). I am committed to working for healing in the world on all levels. As Pema Chodron, Buddhist monk & teacher says, “It is our lack of love for ourselves that limits compassion towards others. If we make friends with ourselves, then there is no obstacle to opening our hearts and minds to others.” I believe as we learn mindful self-compassion for ourselves, it can also help us be more compassionate parents & caretakers, friends & partners, co-workers, organizers & activists, and global citizens.
